film

ive been showin off the film to my friends and family and they all agree it's really effective. we really need to sort out some more of the shots and delete some background noise. etc... but i really love this. i am so proud of the end shots where sam is looking in the mirror that i took. i think it really shows how sad and lonely she is.
from rosie

Sams view (plays Jenna)

At the weekend we showed Sam the draft of the film , she was embarrased but really impressed but we need to add a few things. Looking back on our editing we still have a few things to put in it.

Tonight we are going filmimg and hopefully will be filming the last of our shots.
We will be filming the suicide shots after we have both finished work and in hannah's bedroom.

Here we ope to acheive the shock side to the shor film by filming very depressing scenes.

20th October

Today we had a few problems with our computer it froze on certain clips and we were unable to edit any of the clips, therefore we had to import all of our previous clips again and new clips.

So instead we decided on what songs we were going to choose

Final Ideas Treatment and Recce for JENNA

Jenna
(synopsis)
Jenna is basically about a girl who is constantly being bullied it follows her over a week; she ends up committing suicide because her bullies won’t leave her alone and the school haven’t done anything.
Our target audience are teenagers, a lot of teenagers get build in the uk and I think covering something like bullying will show people the effects it has on people, even leading someone to commit suicide.

Plot summary
Locations
The main location will be a school. Inside the schools corridor’s and gates etc. Some of the filming will take place outside the school, near a local shop etc. The suicide will happen in a bedroom with a school tie.
Characters
The main character is Jenna she is clearly the protagonist, Jenna is being bullied by two people they are other character but you don’t know much as them as Jenna.
Costume needs
We will probably need a few school uniforms and just some other everyday clothes; I don’t think there is anything that we would specifically need. We will dress Jenna in plain clothes where she doesn’t stand out. Showing that even if you fit in with what your wearing bullies could still pick on you.

Style notes
Camera angles
There are a few medium shots throughout the short film. We will also have a few over the headshots we will probably have to use a ladder to be higher than the main character. We will probably be using close ups of the bullies to show how mean and deviant they are. We will use low angle shots of the bullies to make them look more powerful.
Mise-en-scene
It will be set in a school so we will need typical school objects like desks, chairs, uniforms and school bags etc. I would want the school to look quite empty emphasising the loneliness Jenna is going through.
Framing
I think we should just frame it by having a black line at the top and bottom you can create this using I movie.
Sound
We will play chasing cars by snow patrol at the end, as she is committing suicide. That song will be effective as it will really set the scene and will bring the mood down. Throughout we will have depressing music. We still need to decide them.

Recce
See Separate sheet for health and safety notes.

Scripting considerations
12. Courier commercial format we be used when we write our screenplay.

Storyboard considerations
The planning for our short film has taken place from the 5th September – 5th October.
For storyboarding we will use the standard storyboard boxing.

Casting sessions (FIrst Bully and Second bully)

Jenna

Bully 1

Changing idea !

We changed our idea from
I am not a Joan
to
Jenna

Jenna is all about a girl that gets bullied constantly at school by the girls who surround her. Jenna is a sad lonely teenager with no friends who strives on nothing she cannot see herself living for much longer. It’s a sad ending with Jenna committing suicide to end all the bullying.

It is showing the effects of bullying on a teenagers life and how a few people can have a massive impact on one person’s life.

By including different viewpoints you will be able to see the view from the bullies eyes and Jennas the victim.

We will have a few songs through out the film playing but I think the most effective one for the suicide in chasing cars by snow patrol. This song will be effective because its sad and it makes you think about loved ones.

We will not show the actual suicide just the build up to it. I think this will be effective as it will allow the audience to work out what has happened then you just see a shot of her hanging from the back of her door then it will fade out, that is how the short film will end.

In order for this to work we need to film really well and have good enough actors, who will be able to bring the characters to life.

Places we could film for jenna by hannah

the first time it hits by rosie

The first time it hits
The film opens with a black and white shot from the perspective of a skateboard. It starts to move and rock music starts up, matched to a very quick-cut montage of images of accessories, graffiti, items of clothes, and so on. it then cuts to a close-up of a cigarette, and then to its owner, a blonde-haired girl with a pierced nose, sitting on the floor of a deserted multi-storey car park. It cuts to an image of her blowing bubblegum, followed by quick cuts between her smoking and drawing graffiti. The next shot - still from the skateboard floor-level perspective - zooms smoothly into the car park and the film cuts to short close-ups of eyes that appear to be looking intently at each other. An upward shot shows the skater boy as he stands some distance from the girl, holding his board. Flashes of each character's image are followed by more close-ups of the boy, and of the girl's graffiti of a skull. His hands clutch the skateboard as he swings it under his arm and approaches the girl. An extreme close-up of part of the girl's face extends into repeated close-up side views of each character's staring eye, and of the girl chewing gum. As the camera pauses on a close-up of the boy's eye, a cartoon cut-out heart floats out and opens into a dream sequence in which cut-out images of the boy and girl appear in front of what looks like magazine print almost like they are in it. We cut to a shot of the girl's face to the left of the screen looking forward, and then a shot of the boy to the left of the screen. A thought bubble pops up next to the boy and he imagines himself walking with his skateboard. The bubble expands and becomes an image of the boy and girl, he dreams of volleying over her head and wowing her so that she falls in love (a heart appears in her eye as it did his earlier). We return to 'reality' and the camera cuts rapidly between the boy's, the girl's and the skateboard's view. The boy braces himself and begins to skate towards the girl. He slips and the board flies at the girl's head, knocking her out. The boy goes to check on the girl and, finding that she is unconscious, runs away. As he leaves, the girl opens her eyes and smiles cheekily - she has been awake the whole time

about agirl by rosie

About a girl

Narrative:
The main character is narrating to the camera speaking about her life. It’s a young girl. She is working class from the look of her clothes.

Genre:
Linear narrative interrupted by flashbacks to what the girl is talking about for example when the girl talks about her dad it flashes back to her and her dad in a fast food restaurant.

Mise-en-scene:
The girl is wearing a puffer jacket, very typical of ‘chavs’ and her accent is very strong thick Manchurian. There are many high rise buildings and flats most of them are grifiited with untalented pictures and ‘tags’. The girl is walking beside a canal which is filled with the rubbish.

Camera work:
The girl is talking to the camera. It’s mainly in front of her face there are many angles of her face but she is always speaking to the camera. The angles suit her mood. For example when she is dreaming happily of a ‘top flat in London’ the camera is above her looking down and she is looking up at it smiling.

Editing:
There are many short fast scenes that have been cut. This works really well with the dialect as when the girl is talking she uses short fast sentences.

Use of sound:
This film starts with the girl stood on top of a hill innocently singing “stronger” by Britney spears. The shock ending still ha s this innocent song over it which shows that she is still a girl even after everything she has been through. It often has her singing this song throughout to give the audience a sense of the girl. Apart from her singing and talking it’s very quiet this is because the film is revolved around her so it is only her voice or conversations that are used. The silences help us to focus on the girl.

Length:
9 minutes. If this film were to be any longer then it would of felt like it dragged on and then the audience may lose concentration.

Director:
Brian Percival.

Producer:
Janey de nordwall.

Je Taime John Wayne Analysed by Hannah

The protagonist in je taime john Wayne is clearly Tristan, he is the man who likes to think he is John Wayne the Frenchman living in luxury. It is set in London, which makes it seem grander in style; it’s black and white, which makes it stand out from the other cinema 16 films. There are a few typical shots e.g. medium shots and close ups. Close ups are mainly of the main character ‘John Wayne’.

John Wayne (Tristan) is the main narrator as well he’s telling the story as to what he believes is the truth. At the beginning everything seems ok, then his alarm goes as if it’s a wake up call to reality. He has made himself a stereotypical the average Frenchman. He smokes he wears a beret and he has a fake accent. When the phone rings it all becomes clear what’s going on, that he is acting out a character.

There is text along the bottom of the screen in English when French is being spoken almost as if it’s only being aimed at English people. There is a special effect when he pretends to shoot himself in the mouth with his fingers. That is effective because it fits his character really well.

Older music is used throughout the short film which allows the mise en scène to really work. It allows the audience to really connect with the characters humour.

I think this film is typical of what the English think of the French, like it’s an opinion of French people. When Tristan is running own the street after the woman, fast clips are used here and allow him to look like he is running faster, and give a exciting feel like he will get the girl. However there is no noise it’s silent this leaves the audiences wondering what Tristan is shouting.

The basis of this film is all about Tristan’s dream to become French and win the woman. This short film is funny and could appeal to a wide audience. The kiss at the end links to the beginning making it seem like Tristan has achieved his goal.

The shorter clip at the end just gives us that final insight into Tristan’s personality and his fantasy characters.

Final Ideas, Treatment and Recce

I Am Not A Joan

HANNAH AGER
ROSIE DORMAN

I Am Not A Joan (Synopsis)
• I am not a Joan is basically about a woman named Joan who is beautiful, she is a size 18 and has very low confidence, her husband no longer pays her any attention so she ends up committing suicide.
Target audience
• Our target audience is average women of the UK, as a shock that you shouldn’t suffer in silence if you are unhappy or upset about a situation.
• Audience Profile

Plot Summary
• Locations - It will probably be located in a small castle or large house with a slight tower with it.
• Characters - The main characters are going to be Joan, the husband (Douglas), and the mad next door neighbour, and any extra people for background shots.
• Costume Needs - We will probably need quite plain but posh clothes that will make the audience aware that Joan is quite a plain but beautiful woman. We will also need some nightwear for Joan for the end few shots.

Style Notes
• Camera Angles - There are a few camera angles that we may have a bit of difficulty with especially as Joan is meant to commit suicide at the end of the short film, by jumping out of a window. But the rest of the camera angles should be ok to perform.
• Mise en scene - It will probably be set in quite an old Victorian house, with it immaculate inside as Joan spends most of her time there it should be quite homely but lonely at the same time.
• Framing - We would have the block black lines at the top and bottom of the shot, we will do this in I movie.
• Sound - Sad song at the end to help the audience connect with Joan. Plain tune throughout, whilst the narrator is speaking, but it climaxes into depressing music at the end.

Recce
See separate sheet for health and safety Notes.

Scripting Considerations
• 12. Courier commercial format will be followed.

Storyboard Considerations
• Our planning for our short film has taken place from 5th September- 5th October.
• For Storyboarding we will use the standard storyboard box.
